5.13.4Aerodrome sound in multiple mode of operation

The validation activities and the human factors assessment performed in the framework of the SESAR JU programme have indicated that aerodrome sound may be particularly useful in a multiple mode of operation set-up, aiding ATCOs/AFISOs attention to occurrences at the different aerodromes. If implemented, it is recommended that the aerodrome sound playbacks are linked in a directional manner according to the visual presentation of aerodromes, as this was found to be a contributing factor to optimal situational awareness. For multiple mode of operation, if aerodrome sound is implemented, the volume should be adjustable and possible to turn off by the ATCO/AFISO individually for each aerodrome. This would support the needs of individual ATCOs/AFISOs and would enable to minimise disturbing background noise when/if needed. The implementation of aerodrome sound in multiple mode of operation should be carefully assessed in the local safety and human factors assessments, taking into account the particularities of the operational context.
